Unsure about joining? Hopefully this extra information will convince you that you should!
“I'm not big enough to play rugby”
This is one of the most frustrating excuses we hear because there is always a position on the team according to your build. This is why Rugby Union is so appealing compared to other team sports. Generally, if you are smaller you can play in the Backs and if you are larger you can play in the Forwards. Come and watch a match and see for yourself how size really does not matter!
“I'm not fit enough to play rugby”
Please don't think you have to be super-fit to join the Spartans as this is not the case! We would love to be a team full of players in the best possible condition but the fact is we are an amateur club with players with different lifestyles and commitments. The fitter we are however, the better we will perform in matches, and our weekly training sessions will really help you improve on your own fitness levels.
“I have never played rugby before”
The Spartans has always had players with mixed abilities. If you read through the Player Profiles you can see that there are several players who had never played rugby before they joined the Spartans and some had never even seen a match! However, after coaching and encouragement, they are now not only loving playing the sport, but are also enjoying the fun social life. You too can learn!
“I'm too old to play rugby”
This really is personal choice, however there are several players in the Spartans who are in their late 30s and mid-40s. If you've played rugby in the past we agree it may be easier to pick up again, but really there is no age limit to being a member. Come and watch a match and see for yourself.
“I'd probably be too nervous as a new joiner”
It can be daunting joining any new group but the current members of the Spartans each took that first step to join and will be glad you did as well. Feedback from newbies has found that it is sometimes easier to break the ice at “meet & greet” events where people can chat informally about the Spartans over drinks in a social setting. These are run from time to time so please attend. Whether you turn up to training to simply observe for the first time, or participate straight away, the Spartans will make you feel welcome and will hope that you want to get more involved.
“Can I come and watch a session first?”
If you would prefer not to participate in a training session straight away then of course, you are very welcome to simply attend and observe first. Check the directions information and come see us!
“I like rugby but I am not sure about playing in matches”
There is no pressure to play in an actual rugby match unless you want to and are ready. Come to training, watch some matches and steadily gain your experience and confidence. Don't forget that rugby is a team sport and every player supports each other.
“I'd be worried about experiencing homophobia”
Some people are surprised to hear that there really is no homophobia experienced by the Village Spartans on the rugby pitch. In general local teams respect us as just another rugby club to compete against. We're just a little unique compared to most clubs.
“I might struggle to get to training”
The Metrolink tram is the easiest way to get from Manchester city centre on public transport. Check the directions information on the website for more information. Depending on your circumstances you may be able to catch a lift with another member of the club, which happens a lot of the time.
“Can I join even if I don't live in Manchester?”
You don't need to be based in Manchester in order to play for the Village Spartans. Several players come from all around the north west of England including Liverpool, Wirral, Huddersfield, Stoke and Bolton. You could even arrange lifts depending on your circumstances. Just come to training and matches as much as you can.
