For the first time in their history in any tournament, at the 2008 Bingham Cup in June 2008, the Manchester Village Spartans had enough players to field two 15-a-side teams. The 1st XV competed in the main Cup competition and the 2nd XV took part in the Shield competition with less experienced players. After their most successful season to date and winning promotion in their league, the Spartans were optimistic for a good result in the Cup. Unfortunately, they only made it through their group stage and got knocked out in the quarter-finals.

The Spartans 2nd XV were still involved in competitions on the third day however, many players taking part in their very first rugby matches and gaining invaluable experience. The lads were very proud to have made it as far as the semi-finals of the Shield.

The Sydney Convicts were victorious in the final against the Steelers, retaining the Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Cup for the second time in a row.
